Rangers dismiss Murty, potentially paving way for Gerrard

Rangers have dismissed manager Graeme Murty in the wake of Sunday s 5-0 battering at the hands of Old Firm rivals Celtic, potentially paving the way for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to take over at Ibrox.

Murty was initially installed as interim boss in October following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha, before being handed the role until the end of the campaign in December.

However, the 43-year-old has paid the price for the heavy defeat to Celtic, which came just two weeks after a 4-0 hammering at the hands of their rivals in the Scottish FA Cup, with Rangers confirming he has been relieved of his duties in an official statement.

Following the loss to Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership for a seventh consecutive year thanks to the win, reports emerged that…

Van den Berg signing win-win for Liverpool – Stam

Liverpool have nothing to lose from signing teenage Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg, according to his former boss Jaap Stam.

Van den Berg joined Liverpool from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle on Thursday in a reported €1.5million (£1.3m) deal that could rise by a further €3.5m with add-ons.

The 17-year-old has featured 22 times in the top tier of Dutch football and is rumoured to have been courted by clubs across Europe, including Bayern Munich, Ajax and PSV.

And Stam, who managed Van den Berg during his half-season in charge of Zwolle in 2018-19, insisted Liverpool are signing a player with plenty of potential.

I’m really happy to sign for this amazing club! Words can’t discribe how thankfull I am. I feel honoured to say that I am now a   player!…

Neymar: I play for Messi, he´s the man

Neymar does not believe it is a problem if Brazil are over-reliant on him in their quest for Olympic gold because Barcelona rely on Lionel Messi.

The five-time world champions are looking to end their quest for Olympic glory on home turf at Rio 2016 next month and Rogerio Micale s side will look to Barca superstar Neymar for inspiration.

The 24-year-old was not keen to proclaim his own importance but happily admitted he finds himself playing second fiddle to Messi on a weekly basis domestically.

I ve never liked talking about myself, but I ll give Barcelona s example, he told a news conference at Granja Comary.

We have great players but will we deny we are dependent on Messi? Of course we depend [on Messi].

I m not ashamed of playing for him or…

Higuain can make the difference for Juventus – Barzagli

Andrea Barzagli believes Gonzalo Higuain could make the difference for Juventus as they go in search of their first Champions League title in 20 years.

The Argentina international joined from Napoli in a deal worth €90 million, signing a five-year contract with the reigning Serie A champions.

Juve made it to the final of the Champions League in 2014-15, but crashed out in the round of 16 last term and are desperate to go all the way this time around.

Given the number of matches we will be playing, Higuain may well be the difference for us over the course of the season, Barzagli told the club s official website.

He is an excellent centre forward and he has shown that with the number of goals he has scored everywhere he has been.

The Champion…

Mourinho: Chelsea style must change to suit Torres

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Fernando Torres has yet to hit his straps in London because his team-mates have not adapted to him.

Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011 for £50million but has scored just 34 goals in 131 appearances for the London-based English Premier League club, prompting plenty of speculation the 29-year-old Spanish striker is past his best.

But Mourinho, who has rejoined Chelsea as manager after five years coaching outside England, is convinced he can get the best out of Torres in the upcoming campaign.

He (Torres) is not a kid any more, he is at an age where it is difficult to change his play, Mourinho said after Chelsea s 2-0 friendly win over Inter Milan on Friday.

He is what he is and he is very good with the quali…

Gerrard should be player-manager at Rangers – Goram

Steven Gerrard s first decision as Rangers boss should be to come out of retirement and be player-manager at Ibrox, according to Andy Goram.

Gerrard took his first step into senior management last month when he agreed to become Rangers new boss, the former England captain who retired from playing in 2016 leaving his role with Liverpool s academy.

The 38-year-old officially took over on June 1 but has yet to make any signings as the Gers look to close the gap on Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Martin Skrtel, Dominic Solanke and Lucas Leiva have all been linked with moves to Glasgow, but Goram believes Gerrard himself should be the first addition to the playing staff.

If I was Gerrard, the first thing I d be doing would be getting my boots out because he s 10 time…

I want to coach at a World Cup, reveals Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed his desire to enter international management during his career.

The 47-year-old has excelled in club management with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who he guided to the Premier League title in the 2017-18 season.

While he still sees his immediate future with City, Guardiola concedes that the lure of managing at a World Cup or European Championship might be too great to turn down at some point.

Speaking to HLN, Guardiola said: I want to be at a World Cup or European Championship once again, yes.

In the following years, I want to stay where I am. But if someone wants me afterwards, I’m still young.

Guardiola was speaking at the Kevin De Bruyne Cup, an international youth tournamen…

Wales ease with a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein

Pressure was lifted from boss John Toshack as his Wales youngsters grabbed the victory they needed to end their disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign on a high.

But it was a nervy performance, with everyone labouring under the knowledge that defeat in this Group Four clash would be the worst result in Wales history.

Toshack was more than aware of the fans dissatisfaction over his management and recent results and he will also realise that this scrappy victory does not represent an answer to the problem. But he saw both David Vaughan and Aaron Ramsey score maiden goals for their country to end a run of three successive defeats.

Striker Jermaine Easter, a late call-up to bolster Wales s heavily depleted squad, was in the starting line-up in the Rheinpark Sta…

International Friendly Preview: South Africa v Zimbabwe

South Africa and Zimbabwe will aim to put FIFA World Cup disappointment behind them with victory in their international friendly on Tuesday.

Gordon Igesund s South Africa came close to making it through to the third round of African qualifying but fell two points short of Group A winners Ethiopia.

They welcome neighbours Zimbabwe to Johannesburg for the sixth meeting between the countries having won four of the previous five.

Zimbabwe endured a nightmare qualifying campaign, failing to win as they finished bottom of Group G with just two points from their six fixtures.

However, Klaus Dieter-Pagels men did win the last time they faced Igesund s side in November 2011, with Knowledge Musona scoring twice in a 2-1 friendly victory in Harare.
